2nd Molecules Webinar

Recent Advancements in Organometallic Chemistry and Homogeneous Catalysis

Organometallic chemistry is at the heart of the development of new catalytic tools to promote molecular diversity utilizing the most straightforward and atom-economic routes. Progress in homogeneous catalysis allows energy issues to be addressed through the development of highly active and reactive catalysts, which, for example, enable the activation of unreactive bonds and therefore the use of less toxic and more elementary/bulk reagents. Recent developments in homogeneous catalysis also address environmental and societal issues, such as the decrease in nonrenewable resources through the development of synthetic routes from biomass-derived feedstock, as well as the use of earth-abundant metal-based catalysts as more sustainable alternatives to noble metals.
This webinar will present recent contributions in these domains, with a look at nickel chemistry, the development of cascade reactions, and the activation of N–C bonds.

Prof. Dr. Vincent Ritleng
European School of Chemistry, Polymers and Materials (ECPM),
University of Strasbourg, France

Date: 25 February 2021

Time: 2:00 pm CET

Webinar Secretariat: molecules.webinar@mdpi.com

Chair: Prof. Dr. Vincent Ritleng

The following experts will present and talk:

Prof. Dr. Vincent Ritleng, University of Strasbourg, France

Prof. Dr. Vincent Ritleng is a Full Professor at the European School of Chemistry, Polymers and Materials (ECPM) of the University of Strasbourg, France. He is conducting research in the Laboratory of Molecular Innovations & Application (LIMA - UMR 7042). His research interests involve the development of nickel complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene ligands for cross-coupling reactions, C–H bond functionalizations and multiple-bond hydrofunctionalization reactions, as well as the development of structured catalytic supports for supported catalysis, notably open cell polyurethane foams. In 2012, he was made Fellow of the University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS) and in 2014, he was selected as junior member of the Intstitut Universitaire de France (IUF). He has co-authored about 50 research articles and patents (h-index: 25).

Prof. Dr. Gianpiero Cera, University of Parma, Italy

Prof. Dr. Gianpiero Cera is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Life Sciences and Environmental Sustainability at the University of Parma (Italy) since 2019. His main research activities range from catalysis to supramolecular chemistry with particular focus to C-H functionalization methodologies and synthesis of heteroditopic calix[6]arene receptors and catalysts. He is the recipient of several awards and fellowships including the “Alexander Von Humboldt Fellowship” (2015-2017) and the Italian Chemical Society award for “Outstanding Junior Researcher in Organic Chemistry and its Methodological Aspects 2018”. During his career, he published 35 original research articles in peer-reviewed journals (H-index 20, Scopus Author ID 43561088600).

Prof. Dr. Michal Szostak,
Rutgers University, USA

Prof. Dr. Michal Szostak received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas, which he completed under the supervision of Prof. Jeffrey Aubé. After postdoctoral stints at Princeton University with Prof. David MacMillan and at the University of Manchester with Prof. David Procter, he joined the faculty at Rutgers University. His research group is focused on the development of new catalytic methods based on transition-metal catalysis, amide bonds, N–C, O–C, C–H bond activation, Pd–NHC catalysis, and synthetic methodology. He is the author of over 180 peer-reviewed publications and Section Editor-in-Chief of the Section on Organometallic Chemistry in Molecules.

Webinar Content

On February 25, 2021, MDPI and Molecules the second webinar on Molecules entitled: “Recent Advancements in Organometallic Chemistry and Homogeneous Catalysis”. The webinar provided some insight into nickel-NHC-catalyzed hydroboration, Pd/carboxylic acid-catalyzed cascade reactions, and amide cross-couplings via N-C bond activations.

The scientific presentations from Prof. Vincent Ritleng (University of Strasbourg, France), Prof. Gianpiero Cera (University of Parma, Italy) and Prof. Michal Szostak (Rutgers University, USA) were followed by a short discussion. Prof. Ritleng, after a brief welcome to all the attendees, presented his group work on "Hydroboration of Alkenes Catalyzed by a Nickel(II)-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex". Following him, Prof. Cera presented his work on "Palladium/Carboxylic Acid Catalysis for Cascade Reactions With Alkynes", and Prof. Szostak finished the session with a talk entitled "Cross-Coupling of Amides by N–C Activation".

The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend. The full recording can be found here on Sciforum website.
